Conventional diagnostic radiology, also known as radiography, is most commonly known as x-ray. X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) who was a Professor at Wuerzburg University in Germany. Within a month after the announcement of the discovery, several medical radiographs had been made in Europe and the United States, which were used by surgeons to guide them in their work.

With the advent of the scientific era, a change occurred in medicine in understanding the importance of observed phenomena and that diagnoses should be based on veriable facts.  The x-ray made it possible to inspect areas of the body that were previously inaccessible allowing and it is universally acknowledged as one of the most significant events in the annals of medicine.
